There's a very interesting article at www.backpackinglight.com (BPL) by a couple of (competent) Europeans who took a very young BABY across the Pyrenees. They took it gently and had a great time. Mind you, when this was discussed beforehand on the BPL Forum, there were a few in America who thought 'the authorities' ought to arrest them or something for criminal neglect of a baby. Apparently they firmly believed that taking a baby just out of the house was dangerous. Ho Hum.
Disclosure: I helped them create the article. But why not? Sue and I took our baby across Dartmoor in the UK one Bank Holiday when we were young, and had a wonderful time. Sue carried baby in a papoose, baby clothing and baby nappies: I carried the rest. No problem: I was young and strong. And the weather, against all expectations for the UK, was fine the whole time!
One thing we did learn from that trip: put light cotton gloves on baby and do NOT feed him/her sweets while walking. Sweets -> sticky fingers -> tangles with Sue's long hair! Painful.
